Hazardous Information

Appearance & Odour:

Sulfuric Acid is a clear liquid. Lead is metallic grey in colour. Formed lead peroxide is a dark brown in colour with a slight acidic odour.

Routes of entry:

Sulfuric Acid: Inhalation, skin, ingestion.

Lead: Inhalation and Ingestion.

Ingestion of lead occurs by hand to mouth contamination

Handling of lead & acid

Hands must be washed prior to eating or drinking

Health Hazards (Acute)

Sulfuric acid :
Contact to body or inhalation may cause irritation of the skin, corneal damage of the eyes, irritation of the mucous membranes and upper respiratory system, including the lungs.

Lead : Lead exposure may cause loss in appetite, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, joint pain, and difficulty in sleeping.

Health Hazards (chronic):

Sulfuric acid: Exposure to sulfuric acid may cause scarring of skin and mucous membranes, bronchitis and erosion of tooth enamel.

Lead: Prolonged exposure to lead may cause anemia, kidney damage and damage to the central nervous and reproductive systems, can have adverse effect in developing fetuses in pregnant women.

protective equipment to be used: safety glasses, rubber or neoprene gloves etc.

Instruction: Wash hands after handling

First Aid Procedures - Sulfuric Acid

Composition / Information on Parts

Skin / Eyes

Flush the affected area with water for 15 minutes

 Remove contaminated clothing

If irritation continues, seek medical attention

Ingestion / Inhalation

 Do not induce vomiting

Drink 2 Glass of water or milk

If difficulty in breathing occurs, move to fresh air

 Seek medical attention

Fire Fighting Measures

Fire and Explosion Hazards: Hydrogen and Oxygen gases are produced in cells during normal battery operation.

Mitigation: keep battery set always in Ventilated Area

Extinguisher Used: Dry Chemical Powder, Foam or CO2

Accidental Release Measures

Steps to be taken if Battery is broken:

Neutralize exposed battery parts with caustic soda or sodium bicarbonate solution

pH should be at neutral (6-8)

Collect residue in a suitable container after neutralization

Place the broken battery in a heavy-duty plastic bag or other non-metallic container

Properly recycle all battery residue and parts

Handling and Storage

Battery must be Stored in a cool; dry area away from sun light, rain & combustibles.

Battery shall not be stored in sealed box, unventilated areas.

Avoid overheating and overcharging.

Do not use organic solvents or other than manufactures recommended cleaners on the batteries.

Exposure Controls & Personal Protection

During Installation

Battery Room: Normal ventilation is sufficient during normal service of battery.

Do not install the batteries in a sealed/unventilated area.

Personal Protective Equipment

Eye Protection:               Chemical goggles or, safety glasses with side shields and or a full-face shield.

Protective gloves: Rubber or neoprene.

Respiratory Protection: Acid mist/organic vapor respirator.

Other Protective Equipment: Acid resistant apron or clothes.

WORK PRACTICES: Use standard lead-acid battery practices.

Corrosive Sulfuric acid is inside the cell - Do not try to open the vent plug.

Do not dispose your old battery in unscientific manner – sell your old batteries to the Govt. authorized recyclers or Battery manufacturer

Do not expose the battery to open flames this is to prevent an explosion or fire

Use insulated tools while working on the battery.

Isolate the battery from the load while working on the battery.

Do not allow metal object to rest on the battery or fall across the terminals. Remove metal wristbands, chains and loose coins from shirt / overall pockets when working on the battery to prevent accidental shorting.

Do not attempt to move installed battery without removing the connections.

Physical and Chemical Properties

Sulfuric Acid: Boiling Point: 110°C to 112°C , Melting point: N/A , Pressure: 13.8 mm Hg @ 25°C, Solubility in water: 100%, Specific Gravity 1.300 -  1.320, Appearance: clear to cloudy liquid with slightly acidic odour

Lead: Melting point: 327°C,  Boiling point :1680°C,  Density: 11.34gm/cc, Appearance :   acid saturated lead oxide is a dark reddish-brown to gray solid with slight acidic odour.

Stability: Battery and contents are stable in normal conditions. Avoid  Overheating, overcharging which results in acid mist & Hydrogen gas generation.

The MICROTEX VRLA batteries are sealed, recombinant design that require no water addition throughout their service life, thus no contact is made with the battery’s internal components. Under normal use and handling, these batteries do not emit regulated or hazardous substances. Misuse of the product, such as overcharging, may result in the generation of sulfuric acid mist at high levels.

Incompatibility (materials to avoid): Strong alkaline materials,  conductive metals, organic solvents, sparks or open flame.

Hazardous Byproducts: Hydrogen gas is generated in normal operation, charging and overcharging or operating at very high temperatures.

Fire may result emission of CO, CO2 and Sulfur dioxides.

Stability and Reactivity

Lead level  in human blood as per OSHA

Safe – 42 µg/dl

Allowable -  53 µg/dl
